07/08/2008 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Joel Pineiro and three St. Louis relievers combined on a six-hit shutout, while Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick each homered, as the Cardinals topped Philadelphia, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.
Pineiro (3-4) blanked the Phillies over 6 1/3 innings, allowing just five hits and three walks while striking out three. The right-hander snapped a nine- start winless streak stretching back to an April 29 win over the Reds. Ryan Franklin tossed a scoreless ninth for his 12th save.
Adam Kennedy added a double for the Cardinals, who have won two of their last three. St. Louis won despite picking up just five hits, thanks largely to three timely double plays in the field.
"Give their guys some credit for shutting us out, but we didn't generate very much offense," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "We hit into three double plays when we had chances to score."
Cole Hamels (9-6) was the hard-luck loser, allowing both runs on just three hits in seven innings, striking out eight without walking a batter. Pat Burrell went 2-for-3 with a double for the Phillies, who have lost four straight after a four-game win streak.
Neither team pushed a run across until the fifth, when Ankiel belted Hamels' second pitch of the inning over the wall in left-center. Ludwick tacked on another run an inning later, as he belted a two-out, 0-2 fastball deep into the seats in center.
The Phillies couldn't muster much offense against Pineiro, but chased him when they put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh. However, Ron Villone came on and got pinch-hitter Chris Coste to ground into a rally- killing double play.
"Our offense is generated from the top of our order," Maneul said. "We're not getting too much from the bottom of our lineup, either."
St. Louis had a chance to widen the gap in the eighth when Chris Duncan led off with a single, was bunted to second and moved to third on a Ryan Madson balk. However, Cesar Izturis flew out to right, and Jayson Werth threw out Duncan at the plate to keep the deficit at 2-0.
Kyle McClellan retired the side in order in the home eighth, and Franklin worked around a one-out single by Ryan Howard in the ninth to complete the shutout.
"We didn't hit too many balls hard tonight," Manuel said.

MySportsbook.com Posts Heisman Trophy Odds
With 3,919 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and a mere seven interceptions last season, combined with a powerful South Bend Heisman legacy, odds makers at MySportsbook.com have given Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn the best Heisman Trophy odds at 5-2.
Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season. Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.
This online sportsbook has also listed Troy Smith, Ohio State senior quarterback, as another strong favorite to win the 72nd Heisman Trophy. A 7-1 bet, Smith threw for 2,282 yards last season and also led the Buckeyes to a convincing 34-20 victory over Quinn and the Fighting Irish in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.
Current betting odds Heisman trophy are:
| Brady Quinn (QB, Notre Dame) Adrian Peterson (RB, Oklahoma) Troy Smith (QB, Ohio State) Michael Bush (RB, Louisville) Steve Slaton (RB, West Virginia) Brian Brohm (QB, Louisville) Chris Leak (QB, Florida) Mike Hart (RB, Michigan) Ted Ginn (WR, Ohio State) Darius Walker (RB, Notre Dame) Drew Tate (QB, Iowa) Marshawn Lynch (RB, Cal) Kenny Irons (RB, Auburn) Chad Henne (QB, Michigan) Kyle Wright (QB, Miami) Drew Stanton (QB, Michigan State) Kenneth Darby (RB, Alabama) JaMarcus Russell (QB, LSU) Drew Weatherford (QB, Florida State) Blake Mitchell (QB, South Carolina) Reggie Ball (QB, Georgia Tech) |

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
